50 Degrees to 15 Inches of Snow

1/25/2018
Hello Bloggers!

My name is Kristen Brown and I am a college student residing in Sioux City, Iowa. I've opened this blog for one of my literature classes that focuses on nature.

And what a time to bring up nature.

Five days ago, here in Northwest Iowa, on Saturday, it was fifty degrees. I walked outside with no more than a thin sweatshirt and some jeans. It was a good day- not just because it was a Saturday but because it was the first time since before New Years, it wasn't freezing, negative degree weather.

I mean that honestly. For New Years, my boyfriend and I took a trip to a city north of us called Sioux Falls. It was our big romantic, single night getaway. While it did turn out to be everything I hoped, the snowfall became dangerous and the chill dropped to negative fourteen. We were out in it, nonetheless. I was sick for days afterwards.

Anyways, Saturday was incredible. Mother Nature granted us with beautiful rays of sunshine and heat. Then, Sunday was only ten degrees colder, sitting in the mid-forties. It was still beautiful and I enjoyed the warmth.

The news reported an ice storm and possible snow, but I never would have expected the full-blown blizzard that terrorized our entire city. It began raining on Sunday night, then when it dropped into the thirties after midnight, it began to snow. And it snowed, and it snowed, and it snowed until Tuesday morning.

My boyfriend leaves every morning for work at 5:30 AM so that he can arrive by 6. I was worried after he left and instructed him to text me as soon as he arrived. And he did, thank God. But apparently the roads were already beginning to get bad. He was sent home at 10 AM (when he would usually work until 4:45 PM). P.S. He's a welder.

When he got home, he told me that he took so long coming home because the roads had gone white-out. He said that he couldn't see any cars around him unless they were too close for comfort. He also attempted shoveling the drive way, but it fell as quickly as he scooped. Eventually he gave up.

Let me tell you something. My college doesn't shut down for anything. They are persistent. Yet, right before 6 AM, I received a text and an email confirming the shutdown of campus. Not too soon after, I received a text from my employer saying that our owner was shutting down our entire branch of stores. And my workplace is less likely to shut down than my school (because my owner is the cheapest guy I know, like Mr. Crabs cheap).

We spent the rest of the day inside. It was sort of a God send. All of a sudden, I finally had a day of really doing nothing. And it felt incredible after the week I'd had. My boyfriend and I played video games all day.

Then, at about 7 PM I attempted to go out for good. We had nothing at all to eat. He scooped the hell out of the drive way with the help of his cousin and I was off.

I had to ram the car into the snow just to get it to go anywhere. The roads were slippery and the only way to get anywhere was to go fast enough not to get stuck, and slow enough not to slide off the road.  Only a few blocks down I came to a stop at a red light, and sure enough, I was stuck. However, two kind men just happened to be walking by and gave me a push forward. I didn't even get to thank them properly other than a thank you yelled out the window. If I stopped, I knew I'd get stuck again.

So with much stress, I managed to arrive at Wal-Mart for food and got home safe as well. Tuesday, the snow was still a burden. All of my classes were cancelled, but I had to work. What normally was a fifteen minute drive took thirty minutes, and despite the roads having already been scooped, it was like driving on gravel. There was just so much snow that had been packed down and frozen over during the night.

Finally, yesterday I was able to successfully make it to campus for my 9 AM class. However, there was still an abundance of snow on the interstate, plus fog. It was like driving through a whiteout of its own.

Even today, we are dealing with the impact of nature's bipolarity.
